MARRIAGE IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

Marriage abroad

In general, marriage which is legally performed and valid in the Slovak Republic is also legally valid in the United States, but US citizen should contact US Embassy after the marriage in Slovakia. Marriage to a Slovak citizen does not automatically make the spouse a Slovak citizen. It makes a foreigner eligible to become naturalized in the Slovak Republic. Upon request, the Ministry of Interior may grant Slovak citizenship to an applicant who has married a Slovak citizen and obtained permanent residence in Slovakia.

Place of marriage

The application to get married in the Slovak Republic should be submitted to the local authorities ( Miestny úrad, Mestský úrad ) in the region where the bride or groom has permanent residence. Each office can grant permission to get married at the other place if there is a specific reason. The application to get married together with the confirmation issued by the local authorities ( Miestny úrad, Mestský úrad ) may be also submitted to the local church.

List of documents

U.S. citizens are required to present the following documents at least 14 days before marriage:

  1. Birth certificate .
  2. Document certifying the applicant's eligibility to marry . The certificate must state that no marriage record has been found in the respective state, and can be issued by the Department of Health, Vital Records in the state where the applicant lives. An affidavit of eligibility to marry executed at the American Embassy in Slovakia will also be accepted instead of the certificate.
  3. Document certifying the applicant's personal status . If widowed, death certificate of former spouse. If divorced, final divorce decree.
  4. Document confirming citizenship and permanent residence . This document may be an affidavit sworn by the U.S. citizen at a U.S. embassy abroad or before a notary public in the U.S. The document must include the applicant's full name, date and place of birth, marriage status, citizenship, permanent residence address and applicant's fiancé full address, number of applicant's passport and date and place of its issuance.
  5. Passport .

Further information

Documents issued in the U.S. must be certified with an apostille before they can be recognized as valid in the Slovak Republic. Above mentioned documents (2. – 4.) are valid only 6 months after their issue.
